ABBY GOLDEN
Communications INTERN, SURF EQUITY, SUMMER 2021
Abby Golden (she/her) is a studio arts major with a concentration in community engagement and social change at Smith College, class of 2023. She is a hatha yoga instructor for five to sixty-five year olds.
Florida raised and California dreaming, Abby learned about Surf Equity from the New York Times piece “The Fight for Gender Equality in One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth” and has been following our work since. The article inspired her to be an advocate, take herself seriously with her fantasy of learning to surf, and dedication to her own artistic pursuits. When she heard of a stipend she could apply for from her college to do a summer internship, Surf Equity was the first group she reached out to. For them, she has helped alert the public about issues of access and inclusion in the sport. Additionally, she hosted interviews with folks creating good in the surfing world.
When not with Surf Equity, she serves as a 2021-2022 Smith Alliance for Justice & Equity Fellow for her college where she researches community engagement. She also has a radio show titled “Abby’s Beach Shack” in which she promotes artists overlooked when it comes to surf rock and reggae genres on Smith’s radio station.
